What is agar agar powder?

No typo here, this is what it is called. Agar agar is a natural vegan-vegetarian source of gelatin. Unlike gelatin which is made from animal collagen, agar agar is a natural vegetable gelatin made from seaweed, making these gummy vitamins without gelatin makes them suitable for those who are vegan or vegetarian. If you can’t find agar agar at your local grocery store you may need to make a trip to a health food store.

Tips and Variations

Change up the color: Instead of beets and carrots, use a green vegetable to get green gummies or try blueberries for purplish gummies.

Add different nutrients: Try making vitamin c gummies with just vitamin c, add probiotic powder instead of the multivitamin powder or incorporate some omega 3 fats.

Buy a mold: Buy a gummy bear silicone mold so the vitamins are cute and look appealing. It isn’t essential to have this mold but it does help make the gummies kid friendly.

Date the gummies: In case you forget when you made them, label the jar with the date.

  1. I am concerned that heating the vitamins might destroy the nutrients. Can you just add the liquid vitamins to the juice/agar agar mixture and not heat the vitamin liquid?

    1. The agar agar won’t dissolve properly without it be heated. But just to let you know I am going to re-visit this recipe in January and make the necessary changes so it is perfect!
