Discover a new favorite with our Air Fryer Okra recipe, a delightfully crispy and healthy twist on a classic Southern snack. Tender okra pods lightly tossed in a blend of olive oil and a medley of spices, then air fried to crispy perfection.

As a Brazilian staple, okra is added to broths, stews and sometimes beans. In this crispy variation the air fryer is able to dry out the “slime” or mucilage that’s present in the okra, making it an irresistible snack or side kick to any meal.

As the okra cooks in the air fryer, it transforms into golden-brown perfection, achieving a delightful crunch without the need for excessive oil. The air fryer ensures each piece is evenly cooked, maintaining a tender interior with a satisfyingly crispy exterior.

This dish is perfect as a guilt-free snack, a crunchy side dish, or a unique appetizer at your next gathering. Serve it hot with your next meal, or pair it with a tangy dipping sauce like ranch or spicy aioli to elevate the flavors even more.

Enjoy the irresistible crunch and wholesome goodness of our Air Fryer Okra – a simple, quick, and delicious way to enjoy this nutritious vegetable!

Ingredients for crispy air fryer okra

  1. Okra – fresh okra works best. Remove tops and bottom. If the okra is too hard and seems dry, discard it as it is probably too old.
  2. Olive oil – all you need is a tablespoon to help the spices stick to the okra, however if you need a little more that’s okay. Any oil will work.
  3. Spices – use a medley of paprika, garlic and/or onion powder, salt and pepper. Use any other spice mix that you like.

RECIPE TIP

If you rinse the okra prior to cooking, let is sit on the counter to dry for at least a half hour, also pat dry with a towel. Wet okra will not crisp up!

How to make crispy okra in air fryer

  • Trim the okra and then transfer to a baking sheet. Make sure the okra is completely dry before seasoning.
  • Mix spices including salt and pepper in a small bowl.
  • Toss okra in oil, then add spices. Toss well to combine.
  • Transfer okra to an air fryer basket, without overlapping. Cook in batches if you need to.
  • Cook okra in air fryer at 450F degrees for 15-18 minutes.
  • Serve hot as a side meal or as a snack with you favorite dipping sauce.

What to serve okra with

Okra is a very flexible vegetable and it’s the perfect side for most meals. I like to serve okra when I make homemade beans and rice as it reminds me of my Mom’s home cooking from my childhood. Serve with this air fryer picanha or air fryer steak tips and if you have any extra be sure to make my African bean stew with okra and plantains.

Heating and storing instructions

Reheat okra in skillet for best results. Sometimes I pop it back in the air fryer for a couple minutes to maintain its crispiness.

Store leftover okra in air tight container for up to 5 days. I don’t recommend freezing okra as it tends to get soggy in the process.
