No typo here, this is what it is called. Agar agar is a natural vegan-vegetarian source of gelatin. Unlike gelatin which is made from animal collagen, agar agar is a natural vegetable gelatin made from seaweed, making these gummy vitamins without gelatin makes them suitable for those who are vegan or vegetarian. If you can’t find agar agar at your local grocery store you may need to make a trip to a health food store.

Ingredients For Vegan Gummy Vitamins

CARROT GUMMY BEARS

  • Carrot – Use a peeled carrot to add an orange color.
  • Water – Tap water or filtered water are both fine.
  • Maple syrup – If you want sweet gummies, add maple syrup. This is optional.
  • Liquid multivitamin – Use a liquid multivitamin that you can add to the mixture like this one here.
  • Agar agar powder – Agar agar powder helps thicken the gummies.

BEET GUMMY BEARS

  • Beet root – You’ll need a small beet root.
  • Water – Tap water or filtered water are both fine.
  • Maple syrup – Optional
  • Liquid multivitamin

How To Make Gummy Vitamins

Step 1: Place the carrot (or beet, one flavor at a time, same process) water, maple syrup in a blender and blend.

Step 2: Using a fine mesh strainer, strain the concentrated juice into a glass bowl. Add the multivitamin and agar agar powder and whisk to combine. Set aside for 5 mins while you work on the next flavor.

Step 3: Pour the carrot mixture into a sauce pan and bring to a simmer, whisking constantly to dissolve any powder.

Step 4: Remove the saucepan from the heat and pour the liquid into the gummy bear mold using the dropper that comes with it.

Step 5: Refrigerate the mold to set the gummy bears and then remove the bears from the mold and store them in a jar in the fridge.

Gummy Bears Multivitamin (Vegan + Gluten-free)

Ingredients 

Carrot Gummy Bears

  • 1 medium carrot
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup optional
  • 30 tbsp liquid multivitamin
  • 1 1/2 tsp agar agar powder

Beet Gummy Bears

  • 1 small beet root
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup optional
  • 30 tbsp liquid multivitamin
  • 1 1/2 tsp agar agar powder

Instructions 

  • In a blender add the carrot (or beet, one flavor at a time, same process!) water, maple syrup, and blend.
  • Using a fine mesh strainer, strain the concentrated juice into a glass bowl. Add the multivitamin and agar agar powder and whisk to combine. Set aside for 5 mins while you work on the next flavor.
  • When done, come back to the carrot multivitamin juice and bring to a simmer, whisking constantly to dissolve any remaining solids/ powder residue (2-3 mins)
  • Remove from heat and pour into the gummy bear mold using the dropper (which comes included with the gummy bear mold).
  • Refrigerate for 2-3 hours to set. Remove from mold and store in a jar. Keep refrigerated.

Notes

This recipe makes about 300 gummy multivitamins, however, the mold only holds 100 at a time.
Option 1. Buy 3 packages of the gummy silicone mold.
Option 2. Pour the remaining liquid multivitamin into a flat shallow glass container and when set, cut into small cubes.

  5. I love the idea of making my own vitamin gummies. I buy some for the kids all the time but I am always skeptical of the additives they put in them. I will have to wander around whole foods for a while (there are worse ways to spend your time lol) and find some liquid multi-vitamin mix.

  6. I love, love, love the idea of homemade multivitamins! But is it correct that you use 3 tablespoons of the liquid multivitamin in each batch? For the product you use, a serving size is 1 tablespoon of vitamin. So each batch of gummy vitamins in theory is only three days worth of your vitamin serving. That’s a LOT of gummies to eat! Can you replace the water with more liquid vitamin to get the number of gummies you have to eat a day down?

    1. Absolutely Julie! you make the adjustment that works best for you. Next batch I will probably take away 1/2 of the water and replace it with liquid vitamin, I am afraid the kids will take more then they should like they always do. That was what I was worried about the most. I just happened to have this same vitamin already & went online to find a recipe for the vit gummies with the liquid vitamins to see if that was the case. (Losing potency with heat) I’m excited I found your recipe! I don’t have the agar agar right now, but I have great lakes gelatin. When I use all of that up I will order the plant based.

  7. I am sitting here for almost 5 minutes and can’t write anything. I would have never ever thought that we could make gummy bears at home. My 6 year old just loves gummy bears and gummy worms and I have a hard time buying something that is vegetarian. We don’t eat meat and hence try to stay away from gelatin as much as we can. This is my new found treasure and I am definitely making it soon. I have agar agar powder in the pantry and I am going to try without the multivitamins this week.

    1. You can use 1 cup of fruit juice and 1 1/2 tsp of agar agar. This should work fine. Multivitamin is also optional (but a good idea too!). These are super fun to make! Hope you like it 🙂
