This quick stir fry recipe packs in a lot of flavor while only requiring a handful of ingredients. I love eating this Thai Basil Beef Stir Fry over a bed of greens or wrapped in butter lettuce. Occasionally I make a side of cauliflower rice but either way you can’t go wrong with this easy Thai recipe with authentic flavors.

Is Thai basil the same as regular basil?
Thai basil is a variety of basil that differs from its cousin sweet (or Italian) basil in a few ways. For instance Thai basil has a sturdy and more resilient leaves that stand up well to extended cooking times and prolonged heat. Thai basil is commonly used in Asian, Thai and Vietnamese cuisine.
Sweet basil or Italian basil tend to be more delicate. But if you cannot find Thai basil for this recipe you can substitute for sweet basil.
What cut of beef is best for stir-fry?
Flank steak and skirt steak are the most popular cut of meat used in Asian/ Chinese and Thai cuisine, in all of their stir-fry dishes.
How to cut beef for stir fry?
Trim off any white muscle membranes and fat, and cut your flank or skirt steak along the grain lengthwise into 2 inch strips. This will help the meat cook fast while maintaining its juice and tenderness.
What can I add to stir fry for flavor?
A great stir-fry typically consists of four important components: protein, vegetables, aromatics, and sauce. You can add aromatics or herbs to change the flavor profile of your dish if you like. When flavoring my stir fry recipes I try to stick with real ingredients and avoid pre-packed sauces, soy being the only jarred sauce I use.
Here are a few variations I like;
- ginger
- garlic
- scallions
- peppers
- mushrooms
- Broccoli
- snap peas
- sesame seeds
- soy sauce
- paprika
- cumin
- coriander
What do you need to make Thai basil beef stir fry?
- 1 1/2 lb skirt steak thinly sliced along the grain lengthwise
- 1 onion sliced lengthwise
- 4 cloves garlic minced or sliced
- 1 red bell pepper sliced lengthwise
- 1 green bell pepper sliced lengthwise
- 2 oz fresh Thai basil or sweet basil
- 2 tbsp olive oil or avocado oil
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- salt and pepper
How to make Thai basil beef stir fry?
- Slice skirt steak as thinly as possible along the grain, then season well with sea salt and pepper. Be sure to season generously because this is the only salt and pepper going in, although you can always adjust later.
2. Heat oil in a wok pan or large cast iron skillet that is at least 12 inches wide. When the pan is hot add in beef in a single layer. Cook for about 4-6 minutes on each side or until the beef is nice and browned. Transfer beef to a plate.
Note: Do not overcrowd the beef. If you need to, cook in batches. Also, resist the urge to stir the beef only flipping once.
3. Add the onion, garlic and bell peppers and sauté until softened. The cooking time will depend on how thin are the strips of pepper and how well done you prefer.
4. Add the soy sauce. Stir well to combine.
5. Push veggies to the sides of the pan and add beef back in.
6. Top with Thai basil and toss well to combine until basil has wilted.
