And if you love this style of cooking, you might also enjoy my carrot friessweet potato fries, and yuca fries, all made with the same simple approach of letting the ingredients shine while using just the right amount of seasoning and technique to get them perfectly crisp.

To bring it all together, I serve these with a quick yogurt dill dipping sauce that is fresh, slightly tangy, and just the right contrast to the earthy sweetness of the root vegetables.

If you’re looking for a simple, healthy alternative to classic fries that still feels satisfying, this is one to keep on repeat.

Ingredients

For the Root Vegetable Fries

  • Rutabaga
  • Turnips
  • Black radish
  • Olive oil
  • Paprika
  • Italian herbs
  • Onion powder
  • Garlic powder
  • Sea salt

For the Yogurt Dill Sauce

  • Greek yogurt
  • Lemon zest
  • Fresh dill
  • Honey

How to make air fryer root vegetables

  1. Prep the vegetables – peel (if you prefer, I did not peel) and cut the rutabaga, turnips, and black radish into evenly sized fry-shaped pieces.
  2. Season – in a bowl, toss the vegetables with olive oil, paprika, Italian herbs, onion powder, garlic powder, and sea salt until evenly coated.
  3. Cook in batches – place the vegetables in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Avoid overcrowding, this is key for crispiness.
  4. Air fry – cook at 400°F for about 18 minutes, shaking halfway through, until golden and crisp on the edges.
  5. Repeat – cook each vegetable in separate batches for best results.

Silvia’s tips

➜ Cut fries evenly so they cook at the same rate

➜ Don’t overcrowd the air fryer, cook in batches instead.

➜ Use enough oil to coat and so the seasoning sticks to the fries, but not drench

➜ Shake halfway through cooking for even crisping

➜ Serve immediately for best texture

What to serve with

These fries pair well with just about anything. Here are a few favorites

This is one of those recipes that proves you don’t need much to make something really satisfying.

Just simple ingredients, cooked the right way and a little balance that makes it something you can feel good about coming back to.

Air Fryer Root Vegetable Fries

by Silvia Dunnirvine
Crispy air fryer root vegetable fries made with rutabaga, turnip, and black radish. A healthy, easy alternative to classic fries served with a yogurt dill dipping sauce.
Prep: 10 minutes
Cook: 18 minutes
Total: 28 minutes
Servings: 4 people

Ingredients

  • 1 turnip cut into fries
  • 1 rutabaga cut into fries
  • 1 black radish cut into fries
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp italian herbs
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp sea salt

Yogurt Dill Dip

  • 1/2 cup greek yogurt or yogurt of choice
  • 1/2 tsp lemon zest
  • 1 tbsp fresh dill chopped
  • 1 tbsp honey

Instructions

  • Peel the rutabaga and black radish, then cut the rutabaga, turnips, and black radish into evenly sized fry-shaped pieces.
  • Place the cut vegetables in a large bowl. Add the olive oil, paprika, Italian herbs, onion powder, garlic powder, and sea salt. Toss well until all the vegetables are evenly coated.
  • Arrange one type of vegetable in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Do not overcrowd. Cook each vegetable in separate batches for the best texture.
  • Air fry at 400°F for 18 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through, until the fries are tender and lightly crisp on the edges.
  • Repeat with the remaining root vegetables, adding more time if needed depending on thickness.
  • Meanwhile make the dip sauce. In a small bowl, stir together the Greek yogurt, lemon zest, fresh dill, and honey until smooth and creamy.
  • Add a pinch of sea salt to the hot fries. Serve the root vegetable fries immediately with the yogurt dill dipping sauce on the side.

Notes

  • Cutting the fries into similar sizes helps them cook evenly.
  • Cooking in separate batches keeps the fries from steaming and helps them crisp better.
  • Serve right away for the best texture.
