There are certain recipes that can only happen in the middle of summer, when the garden seems to decide what’s for dinner.

This Creamy Tomato Basil Parmesan Orzo is one of them.

Fresh cherry tomatoes slowly burst into butter, creating a naturally rich sauce that coats every piece of orzo. Tender asparagus cooks alongside the pasta, while freshly grated Parmesan melts into every bite for a silky, risotto-like finish. Just before serving, a handful of fragrant basil brings everything together with the unmistakable flavors of summer.

Although this recipe is made with orzo instead of Arborio rice, it borrows one of my favorite risotto techniques, which is slowly adding broth while stirring and finishing with a generous amount of parmesan cheese. The result is a creamy, comforting pasta that feels elegant enough for entertaining yet simple enough for a weeknight dinner.

Whether you’re harvesting vegetables from your own garden or picking up fresh produce at the farmers market, this is one of those meals that lets seasonal ingredients truly shine.

Why You’ll Love This Creamy Parmesan Orzo “Risotto”

Summer cooking doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, some of my favorite recipes rely on just a handful of fresh ingredients and one pan. This creamy orzo is proof of that.

Just like my Roasted Vegetable Pasta, instead of masking vegetables with a heavy sauce, the tomatoes become the sauce themselves as they soften and burst during cooking. Combined with butter, Parmesan, and slowly simmered broth, they create a light, velvety sauce that tastes rich without ever feeling heavy.

Here’s why I keep making this recipe every summer:

  • One skillet means easy cleanup.
  • Ready in about 30 minutes.
  • Creamy without using heavy cream.
  • Perfect for garden tomatoes, basil, and asparagus.
  • Delicious as a main course or side dish.
  • Easy to customize with your favorite seasonal vegetables or protein.

If you love recipes that celebrate what’s growing in the garden, this one belongs on your summer dinner rotation.

Garden-Harvest Inspired Dinners

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Butter – butter creates the rich foundation for the onions, garlic, and tomatoes while helping develop the silky texture that makes this dish so satisfying.
  • Red Onion – a small amount of red onion adds sweetness and depth without overpowering the fresh vegetables.
  • Garlic – fresh garlic gives the entire dish warmth and aroma. Since there are only a few ingredients, fresh garlic makes a noticeable difference.
  • Orzo – although it resembles rice, orzo is actually pasta! Its small size makes it ideal for risotto-style cooking because it slowly absorbs broth while releasing starches that naturally create a creamy consistency.
  • Cherry Tomatoes – these are truly the star of this recipe. As they cook, they soften, burst, and release their juices into the butter, creating a naturally sweet, light tomato sauce.
  • Asparagus – tender asparagus adds freshness, color, and just enough texture to balance the creamy pasta.
  • Chicken Broth – warm broth slowly cooks the orzo while layering flavor into every bite. Vegetable broth works beautifully if you’d like to make this recipe vegetarian.
  • Parmesan Cheese – freshly grated Parmesan melts smoothly into the hot orzo, creating an incredibly creamy finish. I always recommend buying a block of Parmesan and grating it yourself. Pre-shredded cheeses often contain anti-caking agents that prevent them from melting as smoothly.
  • Fresh Basil – it’s what gives this recipe its unmistakable summer flavor. Tear the leaves just before serving to preserve their aroma and vibrant color.

Garden-Inspired Meals

This is exactly the kind of meal I find myself making when the garden is producing faster than I can keep up.

Cherry tomatoes are at their sweetest during the peak of summer, making them perfect for this recipe. As they burst during cooking, they become part of the sauce, so there’s no need to peel or seed them.

If you’re growing basil at home, wait until the very end to harvest it. Freshly picked basil loses its fragrance quickly, so adding it just before serving makes a noticeable difference.

When choosing asparagus, look for thinner stalks whenever possible. They cook more quickly and stay tender without overpowering the delicate texture of the orzo.

Most importantly, don’t rush the cooking process. Slowly adding the broth is what transforms this simple pasta into something silky and almost risotto-like.

Creamy Tomato Basil Parmesan Orzo

by Silvia Dunnirvine
Creamy Tomato Basil Parmesan Orzo is cooked risotto-style with fresh cherry tomatoes, asparagus, basil, and Parmesan for an easy one-pan summer dinner packed with garden-fresh flavor.
Prep: 5 minutes
Cook: 30 minutes
Total: 35 minutes
Servings: 4 people

Ingredients

  • 1 cup orzo
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 red onion diced small
  • 3-4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes quartered
  • 6 spears asparagus chopped small
  • 2 1/2 cups chicken broth
  • 3/4 cup parmesan cheese
  • 1 tsp ground pepper
  • handful fresh basil

Instructions

  • Melt the butter in a heavy pot over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook for about 3-4 minutes until softened and translucent. Stir in the garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  • Add the cherry tomatoes, chopped asparagus and dry orzo. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring frequently. The tomatoes will begin softening and releasing their juices while the orzo lightly toasts, adding extra depth of flavor.
  • Pour in half of the chicken broth. Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook, stirring frequently, until most of the broth has been absorbed. Add the remaining broth and continue stirring until the orzo is tender and creamy.
This gradual cooking method allows the pasta to release its natural starches, creating the signature creamy texture without needing cream.
  • Remove the skillet from the heat. Stir in the freshly grated Parmesan until completely melted. Season generously with freshly ground black pepper.
  • Finish with torn fresh basil and serve immediately.

Notes

Storage
Allow the orzo to cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container.
Store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
As it sits, the pasta will continue absorbing liquid and become even creamier.
Reheating Instructions
The easiest way to restore the creamy texture is to add a splash of chicken broth or water before reheating.
Warm gently over medium-low heat on the stovetop, stirring occasionally until smooth.
You can also microwave individual portions with a tablespoon or two of broth.
