If you’ve never grilled fruit before you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how amazing it tastes. Slightly sweet and slightly smoky, grilled fruit is absolutely delicious.
Coating the pineapple with sugar and cinnamon and then grilling it helps intensify its natural sweetness for a dish that pairs well with your favorite grilled meats or makes for a fancy dessert. The heat from the grill helps the pineapple to caramelize giving this tropical fruit a deep, smoky yet sweet flavor. If you have time to let the pineapple marinate you’ll get an even more intense burst of sweetness.
What makes this Brazilian pineapple different from other grilled pineapple recipes is the sugar and cinnamon mix that the pineapple is coated with. You can easily grill pineapple on its own without adding any sugar or cinnamon and you’ll get a nicely sweet charred taste but adding the cinnamon and sugar and finishing with a touch of honey and you’ll completely transform the pineapple from just grilled pineapple into a treat known and loved by Brazilians.
Ingredients
- Pineapple – Use a fresh, ripe pineapple, peeled and cut into strips thick enough to sit on the grill. Pick up fresh pineapple a few days before you want to prepare this recipe so it has time to ripen.
- Brown sugar – Use light brown sugar or coconut sugar to sweeten the pineapple.
- Cinnamon – Freshly ground cinnamon adds a touch of spice to the grilled pineapple.
- Honey – Honey is drizzled over the grilled pineapple for an additional layer of sweetness.
- Mint leaves – Top the pineapple with fresh mint leaves for some color and even more flavor.
How To Make Brazilian Grilled Pineapple
- Combine the brown sugar and cinnamon in a baking dish.
- Cut the pineapple into long even strips and then transfer them to the baking dish with the cinnamon sugar.
- Toss the pineapple in the sugar mixture to fully coat each strip. Repeat with each slice of pineapple.
- BONUS: If you have time, let the pineapple sit and soak up the sugar mix for a few minutes to intensify the sweetness of this grilled pineapple with cinnamon.
- Preheat the grill and spray it with cooking spray or olive oil spray to prevent the pineapple from sticking.
- Grill the pineapple on both sides until golden brown.
- Transfer the grilled pineapple to a baking dish and drizzle with honey. Serve with mint leaves.
For a slight change of flavor try adding cloves or allspice to this cinnamon grilled pineapple.
RECIPE TIP
If possible, use fresh pineapple to grill as it will hold its shape better. Canned pineapple sits in syrup or juice making it softer and more likely to fall apart when you place it on the grill.
