If there’s one chicken recipe that never fails in my kitchen, it’s this buttery garlic parmesan chicken breast. The chicken bakes up incredibly juicy while soaking in a rich garlic butter sauce that bubbles around the edges of the pan. As it roasts, the parmesan melts into the butter creating the most irresistible golden, savory coating.

This chicken recipe is simple, comforting, and packed with flavor, the kind of dinner that feels a special but comes together with just a handful of pantry ingredients. Serve it with rice, roasted vegetables, or crusty bread to soak up every drop of that buttery garlic sauce.

Why this garlic parmesan chicken works

This recipe is proof that a handful of simple ingredients can create incredible flavor. Chicken breasts bake gently in a rich garlic butter sauce while parmesan melts over the top creating a savory, golden finish. The butter keeps the chicken tender and juicy, while garlic and parmesan add the kind of bold flavor that makes everyone go back for seconds. It’s an easy oven dinner that feels comforting and a little indulgent, yet comes together in under 30-minutes.

The secret that makes this chicken unforgettable? A whole head of fresh garlic crushed into a paste. As it bakes with the butter, the garlic turns rich, mellow, and incredibly aromatic, the kind of flavor that fills the kitchen and makes everyone ask what smells so good.

The Best Chicken Recipes You’ll Ever Try

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “This is hands-down the best garlic chicken I’ve made at home.”

Readers love this recipe because the chicken comes out incredibly juicy and the garlic butter sauce is pure magic. Using a whole head of fresh garlic pressed into a paste creates a rich, aromatic flavor that simply can’t be achieved with garlic powder. It’s the kind of simple dinner that tastes restaurant-worthy but is easy enough for any weeknight.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Chicken breasts – Boneless, skinless chicken breasts work perfectly here. Try to use evenly sized pieces so they cook at the same rate. Note: I used the whole breast as is, not sliced in half or pounded. If you slice the breast, or use cutlets, or pound the chicken, it will affect cooking time.

➜ Fresh garlic (a whole head) – This is the secret to the deep flavor in this recipe. Instead of garlic powder, I use an entire head of fresh garlic pressed into a paste. It creates a much more vibrant, aromatic garlic butter sauce.

➜ Butter – The star of the recipe. As the butter melts it creates a rich sauce that keeps the chicken moist and flavorful. Use unsalted butter so you have better control of the salt.

➜ Parmesan cheese – Freshly grated parmesan melts beautifully and creates that irresistible savory crust.

Seasoning – I used paprika, onion powder, Italian herbs and a pinch of red pepper flakes. This simple blend of herbs pairs beautifully with garlic and parmesan.

➜ Salt and pepper – Essential for seasoning the chicken properly. Keep in mind the parmesan cheese is naturally salty, which means you won’t need as much salt.

Lemon juice – A splash of lemon juice will brighten the flavors.

➜ Fresh parsley (optional) – Adds a bright, fresh finish right before serving.

Silvia’s Tips For The Best Garlic Parmesan Chicken

  • Use real garlic, not garlic powder – this recipe shines because of fresh garlic. I like to use a whole head and press it into a paste using a mortar and pestle. Crushing the garlic this way releases the oils and creates a deeper, more aromatic flavor in the butter sauce.
  • Pat the chicken dry first – this helps the seasoning stick better and allows the chicken to roast properly.
  • Use freshly grated parmesan – it melts smoother and creates better flavor than pre-shredded cheese.
  • Don’t overcook the chicken – chicken breasts stay juicy when cooked just until they reach 165°F.
  • Spoon the garlic butter from the pan over the chicken before serving – that buttery garlic sauce at the bottom of the pan is pure gold.
  • Let the chicken rest for a few minutes before slicing – this keeps the juices inside the meat instead of running out.

What To Serve With Garlic Butter Chicken

To make this chicken dinner a full meal, you’ll naturally want some Crusty Bread or Air Fryer Garlic Bread to go along with it. We love serving this chicken with a simple Brown Rice but if the theme is garlic, one must try this Garlic Fried Rice, it is to die for!

Serve this garlic parmesan chicken alongside this Quinoa Tabbouleh or Quinoa Chickpea Salad. Talk about a nutritious meal that lasts all week so it’s perfect for meal prepping.

A green salad will balance out the flavors. I recommend this Farro Salad with Arugula and Fennel (it’s so good!) or this Brussels Sprouts and Kale Green Salad. They are both fabulous choices to go with this buttery garlic chicken bake.

For Garlic Loves

These recipes bring in the extra garlic punch, they are flavorful and easy to love.

How do I keep chicken breasts from drying out in the oven?

The butter in this recipe helps keep the chicken moist while it bakes. For best results, cook the chicken just until it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing.

Can I use chicken thighs instead of chicken breasts?

Yes! Boneless or bone-in chicken thighs work wonderfully and will be even more forgiving since thighs naturally contain more fat.

Can I make this recipe ahead of time?

You can season the chicken and prepare the garlic butter mixture up to 24 hours in advance. Store everything covered in the refrigerator until ready to bake.

What type of parmesan cheese works best?

Freshly grated parmesan works best for flavor and melting. Pre-shredded cheese often contains anti-caking agents that prevent it from melting smoothly.

Buttery Garlic Parmesan Chicken Breast

by Silvia Dunnirvine
Buttery garlic parmesan chicken breast baked until juicy and golden. This easy oven chicken recipe is packed with flavor and perfect for a quick weeknight dinner.
Prep: 5 minutes
Cook: 28 minutes
Total: 33 minutes
Servings: 6 people

Ingredients

  • 6 chicken breasts
  • 1 head garlic pressed
  • 6 tbsp butter unsalted
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese
  • 1 – 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1 – 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 – 1/2 tsp Italian herbs
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 lemon juice

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F. Lightly grease a baking dish or line a sheet pan with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
  • Make the garlic paste (this is the secret!) – peel the garlic cloves (about 1 whole head) and add them to a mortar and pestle with a pinch of salt. Crush until you have a smooth, fragrant garlic paste. Alternatively you can use a garlic press but avoid using garlic powder.
  • Mix the garlic parmesan butter in a bowl, combine the garlic paste with melted butter, seasonings (onion powder, paprika, Italian herbs, red pepper flakes, salt and pepper), along with parmesan cheese. Add a splash of lemon juice. Stir until it becomes a thick, spoonable paste.
  • Coat the chicken – place the chicken breasts in your baking dish. Spoon the garlic parmesan mixture over the chicken and use a spoon (or your hands) to coat the top and sides well.
  • Bake for about 28 minutes, or until the thickest part of the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F.
  • Rest + finish – let the chicken rest for 5 minutes. Sprinkle with fresh parsley, then spoon the buttery pan juices over the top right before serving.
  • Serve warm with your favorite sides and don’t skip that garlic butter sauce from the pan. That’s the best part.

Notes

Storage

Store leftover chicken in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Spoon some of the garlic butter sauce over the chicken before storing to help keep it moist.
